Tikka (Chicken Tikka Masala)

Tikka (Chicken Tikka Masala)

When you visit our Indian restaurant in Berlin , or opt for our Indian catering , you want to “stumble” over and over again on the concept Tikka. On our menucard we hardly find much space, so we have to limit the explanation of chicken tikka masala as the clay-oven ( Tandoor ) grilled chicken pieces in a special blend of spices and masala sauce with peppers, onions and tomatoes, garnished with fresh cilantro. Sounds appetizing, but this does not tell the whole story.

WHAT EXACTLY IS CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA?

An Indian restaurant with no chicken tikka masala is Virtually unimaginable . In some places, this recipe is simply designated because of its reputation as a CTM (Chicken Tikka Masala) and according to a survey which is the most popular dining meal in Britain in 2001. This title is not an accident, because according to the view of some experts, it is not Indian, but a British recipe that emerged in the postwar period .

THE STORY BEHIND CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA

Today, there are numerous legends about the origin of chicken tikka masala. The starting point was an Indian restaurant where a British guest ordered Chicken Tikka, i.e. grilled and marinated chicken. However, the guest wanted it with sauce, which was then improvised with a tomato soup and some Indian spices. One can hardly prove if the story is true or not.

NATIONAL BRITISH FOOD

The Chicken Tikka Masala is a British Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook. He described the recipe as “a true British national dish” and praised the combination of Indian and European elements. It was estimated that about one-quarter of all orders at Indian restaurants in Britain were of CTM.

AND THE TERM TIKKA?

Of course, the term “Tikka” has its meaning; the preparation of meat pieces on a skewer, which is known as kebab. Fortunately, in our Indian restaurant Berlin Prenzlauer Berg you will receive your Tikka not only with chicken, but also in the Lamb / Fish variant as Vedis Mutton Tikka or Vedis Mix Tikka.
