THE PRENZLAUERBERG
Every resident of Berlin and almost every tourist knows this place. But only very few people know where the term “Prenzlauer Berg” originates. The name “Berg” means the plateau of Barnim and Prenzlauer Berg was called the “Windmühlenberg” in previous years for a long time. Since the Prenzlauer gate was housed at the entrance and one of the main roads leaded to Prenzlau, Windmühlenberg was simply called Prenzlauer Berg since 1826.
MANY OLD BUILDINGS
The Prenzlauer Berg is pleased by its abundance of old buildings. More than 300 buildings are landmarked buildings and over 80 per cent of apartments date back to the time before the end of World War II. Interestingly, almost all of Prenzlauer Berg was built in the years 1889-1905, which is why the oldest Building from 1848 originates. Today’s popularity is resulted due to the fact that many of the old buildings have been preserved and renovated after the “Mauer-fall”. Today, about 160,000 people live in Prenzlauer Berg, that marks the southern edge of the district Pankow.

DIFFERENT neighborhoods
The “Schönhauser Allee” was always considered as the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, exactly the place where our Indian restaurant is. The name was used in a cult film of the DEFA in 1957 for the first time and was then referred to as where most young people choose to hang out. From here, it is only a few steps away to the Gleimviertel and the popular Helmholt-Kiez (LSD Kiez) with Lychener, Schliemannund and Dunckerstraße. It’s worth a visit.
